MELBOURNE Heart made some media noise this week but it would have been regarded as empty rhetoric had it not backed it up on the pitch against Melbourne Victory last night. After 25 minutes, it looked like Heart might be eating its bold words as it trailed by a goal and looked rattled as its young players struggled with the occasion. But a tactical switch by coach John van 't Schip helped them compose themselves and secure a deserved 3-2 win in front of an AAMI Park record crowd of 26,579. Matt Thompson scored a double, while substitute Alex Terra scored the third to lift Heart above Brisbane Roar and into second. While Heart eventually dominated, Victory can feel aggrieved, having missed a penalty in an incident in which Heart keeper Clint Bolton was lucky to stay on the park, while Heart's third was scored after a strong suspicion of handball. Archie Thompson opened the scoring and Carlos Hernandez netted a 92nd-minute consolation, but Heart assumed control in between. Heart started with a back three for only the second time this season, reverting to a 3-4-3 formation, a ploy to thwart Victory's attack. It backfired sensationally. Wayne Srhoj sat deeper to mark the deepest lying of the three - usually Hernandez - but Heart struggled to track their movement as Isaka Cernak also caused issues breaking down the left. It left Heart's young players shellshocked. Victory won a penalty four minutes in when Bolton brought down Thompson. It was reminiscent of Ante Covic's send-off against Brisbane earlier in the season, but Bolton was only shown a yellow and he then picked the right way to save Hernandez's poor penalty.
